Again, We Mourn

By M.L. Morgan

Well, race fans, we lost another young driver today during practice at Loudon, NH. Nascar Winston Cup 1998 Rookie Of The Year, Kenny Irwin was killed this morning. Of course, all of the racing family is saddened. We all extend our thoughts and prayers to his family.

We hate this part, but it is real. Our sport is very exciting, but also very dangerous. Perhaps that is part of the excitement. Very few of us will ever drive 200 m.p.h. But we can do it vicariously, through our drivers.

Kenny Irwin made his debut in the #28 car. He was not a trainee. He'd raced nearly everything which can be raced before Robert Yates tapped him to drive the legendary #28 Ford. He disappointed no one and won Rookie Of The Year.

Felix Sabates put him in the #42 Chevy this season. He had one Top-5 finish already this season. Maybe he was on his way to realizing everyone's expectations. We'll never know.

But we all know we cheered for Kenny. Now we mourn.

We expect the naysayers to crawl out from under their rocks to decry Winston Cup Racing. Too dangerous. Crossing the street is dangerous. Crossing your legs is dangerous. Crossing your heart and hoping to die is dangerous.

We have very little tolerance for people who have no lives. We will never change.

And neither do any other race fans. We will mourn and show our respects for Kenny Irwin.

And we'll go back to racing. We may have red eyes, but we'll go back to racing.
