Laura's Great Adventure

(Or was it Mom's?)

My sister Marcia's daughter is Robin (de Sousa) Speake. Robin has a 5-year old named Laura who provided quite an adventure on October 3, 1999.

Every parent can identify with this story!

We had an interesting adventure yesterday afternoon at my parents' house. Laura was outside playing and I went outside to light the grill (my dad was at his mother's so I had to take that over). I had last seen Laura about 3 minutes before. When I got outside, I looked for her and didn't see her. Then I yelled for her...nothing. So I walked/ran to the dock to see if she was there. Nope. I looked for something floating in the water. [Marcia and Dave (Robin's parents) live on a lake in New Hampshire.] Nothing. Now, I'm beginning to panic. I ran all around the house looking for her and yelling for her. My mom came out and started to do the same. We couldn't find her...she was no where to be found.

Let me tell you, I was not doing well keeping the panic under control. I went in and called my dad and told him I couldn't find laura. He said he was on his way home. I told him to go the back way and I would drive down toward Main St. I passed a man raking leaves. I asked him if he had seen her and he said she passed by 5 minutes ago. I kept going. I turned onto our street and lo and behold, there she was, walking up the hill. She had walked 1/2 mile in 5 minutes. She smiled and waved at me. I stopped and told her to get in the car, started crying and told her she was in more trouble than she had ever been in in her life. She started crying. I went up one side of her and down the other... I brought her back to my parents. By that time my dad was there, his mother was there and the police were getting ready to be called. The panic on their faces matched mine. They were looking in the lake, they had thought she had drowned. I thought she had been stolen. My dad asked if I had given her hell. I told him to do it again so she would really get the message.

She has learned her lesson. All's well that ends well, but for 5 minutes, I couldn't find my daughter and thought I would never see her again. Good grief.

How is that for an adventure?

Robin
