Joe Mollica's letter to the editorI thought you might get a kick out of a letter to the editor that my then-13 year old son Joey sent to our local newspaper.Good ole Joe made the point that the community could do a better job of sponsoring activities for kids. I love the line, "...I am a kid of Olney, have been for 13 years..." (September 1998)

Dear Editors of The Olney Gazette,

My name is Joe Mollica. I have a good idea for an event that could be held annually and would bring the community together in yet another way. Soapbox Derby..... that would be my idea. Bring a soapbox derby into this town to give the kids some entertainment, as well as bring in economic support. And of course should the idea be accepted by, I don't know, the chamber of commerce?, then more businesses (Including the gazette) could get more advertising space. All they have to do is sponsor somebody's car for the race (Paying for the shell, and parts), and poof, instant exposure. (Provided that a decal is created). I know the gazette doesn't have much say in what goes on in Olney, but if you can get this idea into the gazette, and many people read it, we could send all the voters for it into the chamber of commerce, creating the potential for a derby. Now, I would like to add that I am a kid of Olney, have been for thirteen years, and I can tell you that there isn't much for a kid to do other than get into trouble.

Thank you for taking the time to read this. And if you have any questions, feel free to e-mail me at: jmollica@hotmail.com Thanks a million, -Joe Mollica

My Uncle John Mollica said that my great grandfather Canale was a Major with Garibaldi's 1000 Redshirts. He might have been, but I found a certified list of the 1089 people who landed at Marsala in 1860 with Garibaldi, and unfortunately, there's no Canale on the list at that point in the revolution - but maybe another one of your ancestors was there? [Scroll down the page when you get there.] (January 1998)

You have to see the expression on my son Joey's face when a hidden camera took our picture while we were on the Tower of Terror ride at Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida. This is too funny! (January 1998)

Here's a poem written by my then-7th grade son Joey about the American Civil War. (November 1997)
