Market Share

Source: Montana State Insurance Commissioner's Office

Companies with less than 1% market share or less than $5,000,000 direct premiums written are not represented.

At the end of 1998, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Montana (BCBSMT) had written $238,947,708 in direct premiums, amounting to 44.39% of the market share. Its nearest competitor, United Healthcare Ins. Co., had 4.83% of the market, having written $25,979,810 in direct premiums. Interestingly, BCBSMT also is co-owner of the third largest insurance company in Montana, Yellowstone Community Health Plan. Yellowstone Community Health Plan (YCHP) is a for profit organization, whereas BCBSMT is a non-profit organization. BCBSMT does not pay taxes on the $238,947,708 it has written in direct premiums for 1998.

According to Kaiser Family Foundation Research in 1999, 90% of firms with 3-199 workers offered only one health plan. How much choice do you have?
