The State of Illinois Capitol Building
The Sister Cities Comittee took the students to Springfield and New Salem on Sunday October 25th. Our first stop was another "photo op"... we all got out of the vans and took photos of the Illinois State Capitol Building from the street. It wasn't very busy at 10:00 in the morning, so it wasn't very dangerous.

Lincoln's Tomb
Oak Park Cemetary, the home of Abraham Lincoln's tomb, was our next stop. Legend says that rubbing the nose of Lincoln's statue in front of the tomb will bring you good luck. As you can see in the inset of center photo, the nose has been rubbed so many times that it's shiny. We all rubbed it... time will tell if our luck turns out to be good.

Lincoln's New Salem
The next stop was New Salem, located about 20 minutes from Springfield. Lincoln spent time in New Salem in the 1830's prior to moving to Springfield. There's a nice visitor's center that shows a movie on the life of Abraham Lincoln, and there's a restored village that shows how life would've been during Lincoln's time in New Salem.  Oh yes, there's also a McDonald's on-site... what a country!

Hagen, Jo and Ryan
We took Hagen to Merchant Street in downtown Decatur on Saturday October 31 (Halloween Day).  Hagen and Ryan posed with Jo Caulkins, owner of the "Just a Couple of Cards" shop. Jo was dressed for Halloween... with her wig, bathrobe and "Billy Bob" false teeth. She made Hagen feel real "speshul".

Hagen and Young Abe Lincoln
Hagen posed for another "photo op". This statue of Young Abe Lincoln is on Merchant Street.  It's near the spot where Abe is said to have given his very first political speech.
