Oliver
J. Tan is a former student at the University of California
at Santa Barbara. He graduated in June 1997 with a degree
in Art Studio and Asian American Studies. Ollie was born
and raised in the Bay Area. He is a Multi-Media artist who
deals with video, web/graphic design, and acting.
Ollie's video works are personal stories that deal with
his youth stories to broken relationships to his identity
as a male Pilipino Asian American. His video works have
been shown at the The 16th San Francisco International
Asian American Film Festival, 1996-1998 Los Angeles
Asian American Film Festival, The 15th Annual Asian
American Film Festival in Washington D.C., and The
2nd Annual Asian Film Festival in Malaysia. He was awarded
"Festival Favorite" in Malaysia for Bitter While
I Wait. In
his senior year at UCSB, Oliver was teacher's assistant
for professor Kip Fulbeck in the Art Studio and Asian American
Studies Department. He assisted students in the process
of making and producing video works.
Web
and graphic designing are other skills that Ollie possesses.
He was awarded with the 1996 New York Times Foundation
Award for the excellence in multi-media presentation
by a group. Before graduating he interned for KRON-TV Web
Online in San Francisco. Currently he is working at Gap Inc. Direct
as a Technical Designer. Ollie has worked for Eve.com, Alldomains.com, Asian
Buying Consortium (now click2asia.com), Graphical Planet
and Neutral Ground - San Francisco.
Writing
and performing are other activities that Ollie does for
enjoyment. He was President for the Asian American Drama
Association at UCSB. He has written and acted in two of
his pieces in this group. He also directed, acted, danced
and performed at the 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6 th Annual Pilipino
Cultural Night by Kapatirang Pilipino.
An Ollie Fu Fu Tan Productions is from his Chinese nick
name Ollie Fu. His friends tease him about this name
by calling him Ollie Fu Fu. Today he uses
this trademark in his works.
