The Eyes Of The Doe
My heart leaped up
to my throat with fear.
It happened so fast
I could scarcely think.
The night was dark,
the clouds were full,
The rain made slick
the oil on the road.
As I rounded the curve
in the forest grove,
A glimmer of eyes
flashed in my lights.
I swerved to the left,
I swerved to the right,
But I couldn’t escape
the doe in fright.
The years have passed,
but I can’t forget
The fear in the eyes
that flashed that night.
My dreams are filled
with doe-shaped eyes,
And the fear I saw
in its eyes that night.

The above poem is based on a true story told to me by a special friend, Cathy, from our former town of Ocean Shores. The nearest sizeable town to Ocean Shores is Aberdeen, Washington, and the road winds along tideland pilings and then into curvy forest hills. The forests are a haven for wildlife and one has to drive very carefully, especially at night. Sometimes, no matter how careful you traverse the road, the unexpected can happen.
This is for Cathy.
