ONE YEAR LATER
The pride welled in my throat,
I could scarcely speak.
I’d waited a year for this day,
Finally our eyes met again.
He’d grown so tall,
His shoulders so broad,
The hug was long and sincere.
I wanted to hold my breath
So the moment would last.
My mind was racing so fast.
Could we remember the good
Of the years gone by,
And forget the terrible sorrow,
The nightmares that filled the past?
Again, our eyes met and he smiled.
I knew at that moment the pain would subside.
His eyes said I love you,
His smile said I’m back.
I knew he’d come home at last.
