This image is from a facsimile copy of the original 1796 edition of Matthew's journal, which is owned by the Newberry library of Chicago. In 1962 the library published this facsimile.

The earliest editions of Matthew's book tell his story up until 1792 when he reaches Detroit. The later editions go on to include his trials and tribulations in Detroit, Canada and New York and his eventual return to Massachusetts in 1795.

He had the story re-published many times in hopes that the sale of it would "aid towards the support of a numerous family..."
