INFOSEEK Searching Databases
Search for College Programs using Infoseek

You will use Infoseek to display the College topic and then explore a site that includes a large Study Abroad database. What follows are the steps to use in this exercise. (Note: Be aware that from time to time Web pages change format, so these instructions are time dated and you might have to look in a slightly different area of the page or site to continue with your search).

Steps:

  1. Connect to the Internet, launch Netscape, then click the Net Search button to display the Netscape Navigator search page.
  2. Click Infoseek, click Click here, then click colleges in the Education section.
  3. Scroll down the Infoseek Colleges page to view the college topics, then click Studying Abroad.
  4. When the list of Web sites appears, scroll down the list and click Peterson’s Education Center—Studying Abroad. The Peterson’s Studying Abroad page appears.
  5. Click Academic year programs around the world for U.S. students.
  6. Click Bookmarks on the menu bar, then click Add Bookmark.
  7. Click Fields of Study, scroll down the list of subjects that appears, click Archaeology, then click the Submit Selection button A list of universities that offer programs in Archaeology appears on your screen. How many Institutions are in this list?
  8. Click on Boston University from the list of universities displayed, click the Submit Selection button, then when the next page appears, click Archaeological Field School in Belize.
  9. Click Bookmarks on the menu bar, then click Add Bookmark.
  10. Select the text Boston University, click Edit on the menu bar, click Copy, click the Net Search button, then, when the Net Search appears, click Infoseek, if necessary.
  11. Scroll down the list of search results, click About Boston University or a similar site that will lead you to information about Boston University, scroll down the page that appears, then click Home at the bottom of the page, if necessary. The Web site for Boston University appears.
    • You want to find information about the Studying Abroad program in Belize, so now you need to find the required link.
  12. Scroll down the page until you come to a listing of Other Academic Programs, click Division of International Programs, scroll down the page to display the selection of international flags, then click Belize.

  13. Scroll down the page to read about the program, then bookmark the page. You will return to the page later. Next, return to the Peterson’s Studying Abroad page and try searching for programs by Country.
  14. Click Bookmarks, click More Bookmarks, if necessary, to display the Peterson’s site, double-click the entry for Peterson’s Education center: Studying Abroad, then click Countries.
  15. Scroll down the list of countries displayed, click Costa Rica, then click the Submit Selection button. A list of universities that offer Study Abroad programs in Costa Rica appears. Next, evaluate the listing and find a subject area that appeals to you then gather information to add to your table for the first assignment.

Gather Information and Print the Comparison Table

You need to gather the information required for your table from a variety of sites. Use the table provided to you for program evaluation. Decide what fields of study and locations you prefer; apply the techniques you have learned to identify four additional programs that interest you, then gather the information required for the assignment.
