META TAGS & SEARCH ENGINES
Getting Listed in Search Services
Setting Up a Request

You can send a request to the search services asking that they add your site to their index and/or directory. Having Meta Tags in the Head portion of your page will help in this quest.

Most of the search services give helpful advice on the best way to fill out the Add URL request and on which HTML codes you should include in your pages.

ADD SITE or ADD URL

Most services provide a link, usually called Add Site or Add URL, that points to a form you can fill out.

Yahoo, Alta Vista, Infoseek and Excite are the just some of the services that have such links.

The form could ask you only for the URL, or ask for more detailed information. Perhaps your organization, e-mail address and a short description of the site. After you fill out the form and submit it, it could take several weeks for the forms to be processed.

Make sure that the <TITLE> tag has an accurate description of the page or site. Many search engines index pages based on the title of the page.

Always use the ALT tag in the <IMG SRC=" tags to describe your graphic images. Some search engines index pictures too!

Some search engines look for META tags for a description of the contents and keywords included in your site. For a more detailed look at this topic review my META TAGs white paper.

You might want to use a fee-based service ($59.00 per year), on the Web called submit-it.com, http://www.submit-it.com from Scott Banister. This service from Scott submits information about your site to 400 search engines and directories on the Web.

There is another service that is FREE, it’s called addme.com, http://www.addme.com, they will submit your site to 25 search engines and directories after you fill out a short survey of your Web site.

To use this service, you will have to enter information about your site into the form provided at his Web site. Not all search engines accept his service so you should use it in conjunction with the other ideas shown on this page.

Certainly if you have placed important information on your Web pages it should be made known to the world. I hope you get the kind of recognition you expect from your hard work. Good Luck!
