2yrs post liver transplant
Two Years and Still Goin' Strong
On the 25th of September, I will be celebrating my 2nd year anniversary since receiving a liver transplant at UNMC
in Omaha, NE. In this short time, I have made great strides; this is due in part to the support of my family, friends
and the people of Decatur County. I am indebted to the doctors, nurses and employees of our local hospital and
clinic for their help in my recovery and continued success. I am thankful for living in such a caring community.
I am very grateful to Kirk Brown at Rayes Grocery along with my current employer Oberlin Sinclair, for
giving me the chance to return to work and be a productive member of this community once again. These two
businesses have been very accommodating and understanding of my condition and have allowed time off for return
trips to Omaha for check-ups and the numerous tests I must have done regularly.
An important part of rehabilitation following a traumatic experience such as mine, is being able to feel that
you are contributing to your family and community. Volunteering at the Decatur County Good Samaritan Center and
also at the Sunflower Cinema lends much to my continued rehabilitation.
There are rough times behind me and I am sure there will be more ahead of me. I was recently diagnosed as having heart valve problems (determined not to be related to the liver transplant) and will soon need to undergo heart valve replacement surgery. Nonetheless, I try to remain
optimistic, open-minded and focused on my family and friends. These things along with the help of the Lord, help me
to cope with whatever comes my way.
My wife and I established NorthWest Kansas Organ Donor Group, a support group and educational alliance
in 1996 designed to help people in similar situations by lending moral support. We continue to promote Organ
Donation Awareness and Hepatitis Education through various avenues. I speak to many organizations locally, as
well as in the surrounding areas. You can find us at the local county fair each year also. This year’s booth was made
possible by a donation from community members, Jack and Lois Lamb. We appreciate their compassion and eagerness to support education
on Organ Donation.
We are here to help anyone we can. Feel free to email us with your concerns or questions. We
maintain this effort of support and education solely on our own with no financial backing. While we are unable to
provide financial assistance to those in need, we can offer emotional support and help by providing referral sources
regarding medical-related financial burdens.
Thank you one and all and may God richly bless you.
