I would be interested to hear from anyone descended from the Beasleys of Somerset, England. They lived in the Taunton -Watchet - Chipstable area and my husband's great grandfather, LEWIS JAMES BEASLEY (the surname seems to have been spelt many different ways in that area but "Besley" seems to be the version most commonly used) moved from that area to North Yorkshire in the early part of the nineteenth century to work on the railways. If anyone can give me any information at all on this branch of the family, please get in .

HENRY BEASLEY b 8 Nov 1807 in Greenwich, London, England?; died ?. He mar SOPHIA RIVERS (bap Apr 1802 London) 20 Feb 1831 in Deptford, Saint Nicholas, London, England. Ch: WILLIAM HENRY BEASLEY (b. 2 Mar 1832), THOMAS BEASLEY (b 20 Jan 1834), SAMUEL HENRY BEASLEY (27 Sep 1835), JANE ELIZA BEASLEY (29 June 1837 -d 4 Sep 1840), SOPHIA BEASLEY (14 Jun 1840), HARRIET JANE BEASLEY (2 Dec 1842), MARY ANN BEASLEY (1 Dec 1844 - 24 Dec 1844), HENRY BEASLEY (13 Dec 1846), GEORGE BEASLEY (29 May 1849), JOHN BEASLEY (2 Aug 1852 - 18 Nov 1943) (mar ELIZA HARLING, both bur Shooters Hill Cemetery, London). The following notes appear in an article supplied by Maureen Flynn: "Two generations of a well known fishing family, the Beasley's, were apprenticed to Fisher's - Henry Beasley in 1828 to William Fisher and his son, George Beasley, in 1866 to Thomas Patterson Fisher, doubtless a son of one of the founders. Surprisingly, for the normal seven years was the usual Greenwich custom, both these apprenticeships were for three years, with the rate of pay hardly changed in 38 years - L11 and L12 respectively in the first year, L13 in each case in the second year and L16 and L14 respectively in the third year. George Beasley first went to Iceland with his father at the age of ten in 1859 (seven years before he was apprenticed.) On that trip they found a woman in labor and without help. Henry Beasley helped to deliver the child which was named Hendrik in his honour and they decided to call the place Aunt Beasley's Bay, which name they cut into the rocks where it could be seen for years afterwards." In 1882, John Beasley's profession is stated as "stoker".

I am searching for information on JOHN BESLEY of Chipstable Somerset, England, b abt 1710, mar abt 1730 to Mary (mn uk) at Chipstable. Ch were JANE b 1779; JOHN Jr., b 1736; WILLIAM, born 1738, STEPHEN, b 1743, FRANCIS, b 1745, and MELLINOR, b 1749. All were christened at Chipstable but the family may have moved later to Lyng or Wiveliscombe, Somerset. All efforts to go further back than 1710 have been fruitless. I can find John Besleys (plus other variations of the name) in other parts of the UK but cannot obtain any definite links between them and my ancestor. We have spent time researching the family in Somerset but without success. Lewis seems to be a name which has been popular in the family since 1784. I should be most grateful for any info which will help me trace beyond John Besley, as I have no idea where his parents came from nor if he had any brothers and sisters. Hoping someone may have the key.
