William served 28 years in the US Air Force and retired in 1960 with the rank of colonel. He was stationed at Hickham Air Force Base in Hawaii when he was transferred to the Orlando area, where he became the base executive officer of the Orlando Air Force Base until his retirement.

William had several passions: his military service, his collection of orchids and his family. While stationed in Hawaii, he became an avid orchid grower.

"We started with a few (orchids) and then a few more. By the time we left Hawaii four years later, Daddy had about 12,000 orchid plants," said his daughter, Sandra Joyner.

When the family moved to Oviedo in 1960, he shipped the 12,000 orchids to his new home and kept them indoors while he built a greenhouse. Just as he finished, Hurricane Donna struck the area and wiped out the greenhouse. Unfettered by such minor setbacks, he built another, even larger greenhouse. He and his wife of 59 years, Margie, began selling orchids door to door. Eventually, they supplied orchids to many central Florida florist shops.

His family said William was tough but tender. In his last words, as his family gathered around his hospital bed- side, he told his wife how pretty she was.
