Rock Island County

Confederate Prison Cemetery

Location: Rock Island, Il. at what is now called Arsenal Island. This was the site of a yankee prison for Southern soldiers and civilians which housed thousands of Southern prisoners of war during the War for Southern Independence (1861-1865, including both soldiers in the Confederate States Army and civilians who were Southern symphathizers (listed as "Citizen"). Thousands of these soldiers and civilians died of starvation, lack of medical care, mistreatment, rampant disease and wounds. Most were buried in mass graves and few are identified. Information shown is their military units (company and regiment) and date of burial, not death.
