Lyndon Baines ("LBJ") Johnson was born 27 Aug 1908 near Johnson City, Bexar County, in southwestern Texas. He was a son of Samuel Ealy Johnson Jr. and his wife Rebecca Baines. Samuel Jr. was a small farmer with only a modest income but he served five terms as a representative in the Texas State Legislature.

The Johnson family had a small farm in a poor, hilly farming region. He attended the public schools nearby and graduated from Johnson City High School in 1924. In 1927, LBJ heeded his mother's appeals to further his education and enrolled in Southwest Texas State University (then Southwest Texas State Teachers College) in San Marcos. To help support himself, he took a year off to teach school. Despite this, he managed to graduate after only 312 days in school. While in college, he was active in debate and college politics and edited the college newspaper.

After his graduation, he taught public speaking and debate at a Houston, Tx. high school. LBJ had his eye on politics at an early age and in 1931, he campaigned for Richard M. Kleberg for Congress. LBJ was rewarded for his help with appointment as secretary to the new Congressman.

LBJ arrived in Washington in the midst of the Hoover Republican "Great Depression", when the old order was coming to an end and the era of Franklin D. Roosevelt's "New Deal" was being inaugurated.
