WILLIAM HENRY SANDERS, later "Duncan"
In. to Ar.

I do not now have access to the complete set of data for this man but this may help someone find their ancestors. WILLIAM HENRY SANDERS of southern Indiana--I'm going to say Orange Co. but that may not be correct. It was in extreme south of In. His ancestral line is heavily intertwined with the COX surname and has a small connection to the Duncan surname. At age 15, he mar PARMELIA. Marriage is recorded and I'm sorry I don't remember the full name. He had 5 or 6 ch before Parmelia died. He then mar RACHEL CLEMENTS, dau of Bible stomping preacher JOHN CLEMENTS. They had 10 or 12 children. He changed his name to William Henry DUNCAN and moved to AR because he was implicated in the murder of a family with an axe. Family tradition says that the area was plagued by "Jayhawker" or "Redleg" activities that ceased when this family ceased. When he left Indiana, he first went to Washington Co., AR. His first family did not come with him, although they ended up in AR, too, keeping the name Sanders. I think I am remembering correctly when I say that he had a son, "WILLIAM HENRY SANDERS" in the Sanders family and a "WILLIAM HENRY DUNCAN" son in the Duncan family (who was always given as the oldest "Duncan" son). In or abt 1875, William Henry Sanders Duncan went to the gold rush in Colorado where 2 or so of his ch were born. His son, John Duncan, either died or stayed in Co. He and his second family ended up in Siloam Springs, AR. when that was still Indian territory. Family tradition says Rachel Clements was part Indian. Her father preached to the Indians, had a mission in Ok. Indian Territory. There are still many Duncan descendents in that area, most of whom pitch a fit if you bring up "Sanders". One of the Duncan descendents wrote a book about this Sanders/Duncan line. I don't know if it is still available. I found it in researching my ex-husbands Cherokee ancestors. This is all the information that I remember.

Some say he came from In. or IL. He mar MATILDA JANE MATLOCK. Any info on Charnel and Matilda Jane would be appreciated.
