In 1922 the family moved to Miami, Fla. At that time, 6th St and 1st Avenue were still country and some of the roads were made of wooden blocks. Each time it rained you could hear the blocks "Pop" out. Daddy owned a Model "T" touring car, no windows, and we would go back and forth from Miami to Frostproof, Fla. There was no fence law than, so everyone made their own roads. The water table was normal and at that time the water was flowing deep from north of Okeechobee, Fl. to the Gulf of Mexico. After getting to Frostproof, all the families would get together and ride out to Tiger Creek where we all would swim-fish-cook and sleep. The two houses there were solid, but old and had no screens or windows. If one could stand the mosquitoes, one might get a little sleep with the help of smoking rags in a tin cup. We had a lot of fun back then. We would catch fish with a safety pin and drink water directly from the water around us.
