Scarlett on Robert Redford:
It helped a lot that he was also an actor. A lot of the times you're not as fortunate to have that communication that you have with a fellow actor. And when they're directing you it makes it so much easier. It made it so much easier on my part. I guess you could call it actor talk.
Cast on Scarlett:
The role of Grace MacLean is a great part for a young actress because Grace is so central to the story. Her condition and her situation dramatically drives the whole piece. (HW UK website)
important as it would give her a real combative strength with the mother. It was worth taking a chance on her. (Total Film)
Scarlett is a very young actress, but she's not inexperienced. She's born to be on a movie set. It's extraordinary. And I thought we worked well together as a mother and daughter. There was definitely a chemistry there which was a relief, because it's not at all easy to play a mother, And I shouldn't think it's very easy to play a daughter either. It's a very intimate relationship that is difficult to cheat on. (Press Kit)
I was pleased we had a natural ease from the beginning. ("The Horse Whisperer: An Illustrated Companion", p 123) It's infuriating that someone that young could be so good. Good for her, she's terrific.
Crew on Scarlett:
I think Scarlett started out pretty scared, but she's one of those people who doesn't say she's scared or show fear. And she made a two hundred per cent change and improvement. She got to where I could put her on any horse on the set, and she could just lope off and have fun.
When I had a break, there was always a horse for me to hop on. They'd have to send out a search party to find me. I'm obsessed with horseback riding now. Whenever production assistants needed someone to come to the set, they'd play a song over the walkie-talkies they had chosen for that person. Mine was Go West by the Village People.
