The following articles were published in ROOTS, which may be purchased from the HIPS Publications Director. The list includes only stand-alone pieces, not those in which my contribution was only part of a composite article someone else prepared.

"The Apocryphal Arilbreds", ROOTS Volume 10, #2 (Fall, 1997), pp. 11-13. As arilbreds have evolved, so has the classification system. Cultivars that were once classified as arilbreds, even some that won top awards as arilbreds, have been disenrolled. Many that date from the era in which registration was not a prerequisite for competing for arilbred awards do not even appear in modern checklists. This article provides not only a general description of this group of cultivars and their history, but also a list of the disenrolled award-winners.

"Hybridizing With Historics", ROOTS Volume 9, #2 (Fall, 1996), p. 27-30. Some of the hybridizing experiments I've conducted using historic cultivars, and some proposed experiments that anyone who has the stock can try.

"The Purple Puzzle". ROOTS Volume 9, #1 (Spring, 1996), p. 8. Discussion of the use of leaf-base color in checking out a UFO (Unidentified Flowering Object).

"Top Ten Historic Varieties". ROOTS Volume 9, #1 (Spring, 1996), p. 16. An opinion piece describing the historic iris I would grow if I had the ideal, small display bed.
