LOUIS ASBURY MCMILLAN
May 13, 1893 - January 21, 1977
This poem was found in my Grandfather's Bible (copyrighted 1926). It is handwritten and the paper is yellowed and brittle, but it has been tucked safely in his Bible for many years. The writing is difficult to read and it is signed "LAM - The Bum"

THE ROVER
I have always been a rover
And I will be 'til I die,
Wasting good shoe leather
On uneven railroad ties.
There's little else I'm good for
When you get right down to facts,
If you offer me a steady job,
You'll learn just how I act.
Foreign ports are dull as home ones
To a man who's on the move,
For I drift along the surface,
'Stead of fitting in a groove.
I like the sky above my head,
Can't sleep well in a town,
And seems I want a change of scene
Each time the sun goes down.
Though I've crossed the great ocean
On some far horizon's track,
I no sooner get to one place
Than I start a-roaming back.
I have looked the whole world over,
But I can't - not 'til I die -
Make my tired feet stop moving
At the bid of Jesus Christ!
