It is believed that five McCoy brothers emigrated to either Maryland or
Pennsylvania from Scotland. The parents of these brothers are unknown, but it is speculated
that they did not come to America with their sons as it is believed the father was already
deceased.
Daniel McCoy (circa 1749 in Scotland - 23 Apr 1809 at Washington Co,
PA) married in 1782, Nancy McCoy (circa 1743 in Scotland - 18 Jul 1840 at Washington
Co, PA), the daughter of Alexander McCoy and Christiana McDonald. The marriage
was performed in the home of the bride's father by the Rev. John McMillan [see McMillan]. Nancy supposedly died at age 97, however,
that would indicate that her known children were all born after she reached age 40!
Tradition states that Daniel and Nancy emigrated on the same ship, the Jeanette in
the company of the Frazier, Ross, McDonald, Sutherland, and McCoy families. It is also believed
that they worked for the same planter in MD to pay for their passage. Additionally, many family
historians note that they "were not related", although they were likely to have been "kin" in
Scotland. Daniel enlisted in the 8th Regt. of the Pennsylvania Continental Line during the Revolution
serving under Capt. Moses Carson and Col. Enos McCoy. He was captured by the British,
then later released. Nancy applied for, and received a pension of $80.80 per year beginning 4 Mar
1836.
John McCoy (23 Oct 1783 at Washington Co, PA - 29 Dec 1852, Henry, Marshall Co, IL) married on 24
Sep 1810 at Ohio Co, VA, Jane Brice (4 Apr 1793 at Ohio Co, VA), the daughter of Rev.
John Brice and Rebecca Kerr. John McCoy petitioned to the U. S. Government to continue
his father's Revolutionary service pension after his mother's death, however, it is unknown whether
he was successful.
John Brice McCoy married as her 1st husband, Caroline Wells (23 Jul 1820 - 29 Sep 1865, Decatur, Macon Co, IL, daughter
of Chester Wells. After John's death, Caroline married W W Jamison.
Henry Wells McCoy (1 Sep 1840 - 14 Mar 1858 at West Alexander, PA) died of
consumption at the home of his great uncle, Kenneth McCoy.
Alexander McCoy (26 Oct 1818 at Washington Co, PA - 10 Feb 1892 at Pasadena,
CA) married 1st on 27 Sep 1857, Sarah J Matthews, daughter of Reuben Matthews. He married
2nd, on 23 Jan 1869, Lucinda Dutton, daughter of Alva Dutton. Alexander graduated from
Washington College in the Class of 1844. He practiced law in Chicago and Peoria, IL; was a District
Attorney in Chicago; and was elected to the Illinois Legislature in 1865. He migrated to Pasadena, CA where
he again practiced law from 1889 until his death.
Rebecca McCoy (1821 at Washington Co, PA - 15 Mar 1848, same) never married and
is buried in the old churchyard at Three Ridges Presbyterian Church at West Alexander, PA.

Alexander McCoy (29 Mar 1785 at Washington Co, PA - before 1840, same) married Mary
Singer.

married in 1827, Nancy Montgomery (8 Mar 1802 at Smith Twp, Washington Co, PA - 1887 at Indianola, IA).

Christiana McCoy (19 Jan 1789 at Washington Co, PA - after 1840 in Illinois) married on 27
Sep 1813 at Three Ridges Presbyterian Church at West Alexander, PA, John Sutherland (circa 1786), son of
John Sutherland and Margaret Morrow. John and Christiana removed to Peoria, IL.
Kenneth McCoy (25 May 1791 at Washington Co, PA - 19 Jan 1873, same) married on 18 Apr
1817, Jane Brownlee (20 Apr 1793 at Washington Co - 27 Jul 1869, same), daughter of James Brownlee
and Jane Lehman. Kenneth and Jane were staunch abolitionists and were among the founders of the Free
Presbyterian Church, breaking away from Three Ridges at West Alexander, PA in 1838. Prior to the Civil War, they
participated in the "Underground Railroad" in the West Alexander area. Kenneth served as Secretary to the Board
of Trustees of the West Alexander Academy at its inception on 27 Mar 1840 and was very active in matters of
education in the area. Both Kenneth and Jane are buried at the Free Presbyterian Churchyard at West Alexander.
