Germany/Bulgaria Trip Diary
"Singing in the Rain..."
Day 5
I am really
wondering why Bulgarian girls, as pretty as they are, don´t smile very much….
My room is
beautiful. It has 8 towels, some of which resemble (but are not) Egyptian
cotton. 8 towels ladies and gentlement…. that´s almost one for each finger!
But there´s no trash can in the main room and the sun comes up bright and early
from the East.
I can live
with most things but it´s these miserable chicks that don´t make sense, so that
became my "crusade du jour". John and I were taken to "the best place in
town for breakfast" which was really nice but didn´t have any eggs or bacon or
hash browns and struggled to produce a single piece of toast. Nice wine
list though…..
Then we went
to the private estate of the gentleman whose birthday party we would perform at
tonight. This was impressive… big houses, bigger lake, jet skis, a
totalled Hummer and a tennis court that was so overgrown it matched my game.
But great, great people!!
Mladen´s sons
had apparently hatched this plot (John and I appearing at his birthday) as a big
surprise and because he was such a big fan and so, when we showed up for lunch
he really was surprised and we just had so much fun from that point on.
John tried his
hand at clay pigeon shooting. Why do they call it that? They were
aimlessly (perfect word) firing at orange discs flying through the air and I
didn´t see anything resembling a pigeon made of clay anywhere. But those
eyes…. They would haunt me for a while.
I was given a
guided tour of the animal kingdom here (they have almost as many dogs and cats
as Monica and I do at home) and we were joined at the table by some Persian cats.
It was all very nice but we had to go back to the hotel for siesta and to
prepare for tonight. I had the perfect siesta but still those eyes were
everywhere…
The party was
just beginning and everyone was happy. I nibbled at the food, waiting for
the main course (which came but was unrecogniseable) and we were all entertained
by a fantastic performance by a Bulgarian lady named Sofi Maranova. If you
can find one of her CDs I highly recommend it. She has a great voice and
is a supercharged performer, even for this small gathering of about 30 people.
The highlight of our spot was a fairly dreadful rendition of "Happy Birthday"
and then we had some coffee and desert.
Now I come to
think about it, I am having trouble adapting to Bulgarian food. The salads
are okay but I just can´t find main courses that I like. I´ll have to work
on this!
Though the
eyes really tried to convince me to stay, we had to take our leave and, after
long farewells, we made our way back to the hotel where we enjoyed a nightcap
and made plans for tomorrow. John is headed home to England, I am going to
Sofia to do a TV show so our schedule is pretty clear.
The "egg man"
had promised to make up for it!
