Germany/Bulgaria Trip Diary

"Singing in the Rain..."

Day 6

The owner of this hotel (and we did meet him…. John even rode in his Maserati) needs to send his female staff to charm school.  I managed to make one or two of the girls behind reception smile and the difference was amazing.  Someone said it takes more effort to frown than it does to smile but a smile goes a long way in the hospitality business and they need to figure that out!  Someone told me that the younger generation in Bulgaria donīt want to smile or donīt feel they have any reason to but thatīs just more of the same "teenage angst" stuff I have been hearing about for so long.  Life is tough and itīs tough for all of us but I just donīt see the point in being miserable (or at least looking that way).  Come to think of it I still donīt understand why people walk about in groups of three or four with earbuds in…. Must be a riveting conversation!

We got our scrambled eggs… thanks Nikolai… and we set course for the airport so John could catch his flight to the UK.  Then we found the hotel (and a really great one it was!) and I got ready to go to the TV station to record the "Slavi" show which is watched every night by half the population of Bulgaria.  I was a bit tired and (strangely) a bit nervous but I only had to answer some silly questions, act up a bit and sing "Lady In Black" with the house band so it went well enough.

There are some really incredible musicians and singers in this country and I really like their home-grown music so Iīve collected quite a few CDs along the way!  They go into my iPod alongside Joan Baez (Baptism) and Leonard Cohen!!

So… the show is over and itīs time for dinner and we had a nice little group of people but I still failed to find a decent steak.  I was thankful for the food I did have but it seems that beef is not the strong suit in this country so I am going to have to practise a bit more.

I have to get up at 4am tomorrow so I had to bail out early, paid my respects and walked the short distance to the Central Park Hotel.  If you ever get a chance to visit Sofia, please do try this hotel.  Itīs really cool and the girls at the front desk actually smile!  Must be a "big city" thing!
