July 29th 2004

It’s raining!! Perfect day to do the vocal on "Rain" but first I need to do a reference vocal on Illusion for Andrey (drums) and Alexei (bass). Okay… that’s done and now we are doing the bass and drums so the day is off to a good start. Okay… that didn’t take long so… a quick reference vocal on "Rain" and now it’s lunch time. Big Al has ordered sushi… yum!

Now Sasha is setting up the studio for the woodwind overdubs. I have decided not to use brass because I am afraid it would become too “orchestral” so I am hoping that the planned combination of wind and strings will provide the colour I am looking for, making the end result unique and enhancing (rather than detracting from) the core of the songs.

We are using 2 clarinets, 2 flutes and an oboe and the session went very smoothly really. I am not sure I will use all of it (especially a bit in "Free Me" that reminds me of a Tom & Jerry cartoon) but between the strings and most of the woodwind parts we have achieved exactly the desired effect! I think you’ll like the new life that these arrangements and recordings bring to songs that you (well, most of you anyway) know so well. It wouldn’t have been enough to just re-iterate them, to me at least, for this project to be justified musically, it was essential to approach them from a completely new angle and we have certainly done that!

Well, it’s now 8:42pm (20:42) and the creative side of my brain has just shut down so it’s time to call it a night, relax a bit and head back to the hotel. We made good progress today and if we have two more good days it won’t hurt us to take Sunday off for the video shoot. But I can’t think any more so I am signing off for now… ”talk” to you tomorrow!

Next day...
