February 4th 2003

Finally!! We get to start work on the new CD and I am really excited. It's a bit colder here than it is at home but this IS home for the next five or six weeks so I'll have to get used to it!! And obviously we've had to change our plans quite a bit since last year so a lot of things will be different and will take a bit of getting used to of course!!

The first day or two will be set-up days and time to start working on sounds and so on. As you probably know, when you move acoustic instruments (drums, guitars etc.) into different environments they take time to settle into new temperatures, humidities etc., so even though we got the drums sounding really cool by this evening there will still be some adjusting to do tomorrow.

The main room here sounds fantastic but it's quite small so we will fill it with drums and microphones and record the bass direct. This will avoid any unwanted ambient sound getting into the drum mics and I'll also do "scratch" guitar and vocal tracks from the control room. If need be we can always re-record the bass or send the direct signal back into an amp and record it again on a separate track which gives us two tracks to "mix and match" or simply to choose between.

The objective is to get "killer" drum and bass tracks down and then start building "the big picture" from there. The guys have worked hard with the demos so we'll create the final arrangements now.

Back to work… "talk" to you later!

Next day...
