DAY 12
We're on the road again! Now we are off to Joensuu,
a small town near the Russian border and about a six hour drive
from Helsinki.
The roads here are very straight and there's not too much traffic
but the speed limits are quite low
mainly 80 kms per hour
and 100 occasionally. Drivers are very respectful of them too and
I found out why today (no I didn't get a ticket!!). They will give
you 5 kms per hour leeway but the fines above that are heavy and
based on your income! Andy joked that, because we're not making
much money, if we did get stopped they would owe us money!!
Worst of all, if you are 40kms over they immediately take your vehicle
away!! No wonder they have a great road saftey record here
they have strict rules which the people obey which sounds odd today
doesn't it?
This stage was small and low with little room for
manouevre so we knew we were in for an unusual night. The crowd
was very close and we couldn't see past the first two roads which
probably meant the people behind them couldn't see us but they certainly
made a lot of noise!!! We didn't feel we were at our best tonight
but they loved it and made it special as a good audience always
does!
Got to go to bed early tonight as tomorrow is the longest drive
of the Finnish tour.
Next day...
