DAY 3
We all met at the office for
the 4-hour drive to Swansea which is in South Wales
if you
look at a map of the UK it's the bit on the left that looks a little
like a dog sitting up on its back legs (No I haven't been at the
Jamaican Woodbines
I gave that up a long time ago!). Anyway,
you have to cross the Severn Bridge which is kind of cool and the
drive was okay because the weather in England is nice right now!
The Patti Pavilion is a fairly large theatre near the seaside and
when we got there everything seemed to be in pretty good shape and
the dressing room became our temporary home. After sound check we
went to our hotel which we re-named Fawlty Towers and then went
back to the gig. I only mention this because we had our first nasty
experience of the tour when someone smashed the window of our people
carrier and stole
nothing much really
but it was a drag!!
Yatta took charge of things though and we'll do tomorrow's trip
with a temporary window, no radio and bits of broken glass all over
the place! The road is fun at times!!!
I do want to make special mention of the promoter of this show,
Steve Elsdon. He and his staff made a special effort to make us
welcome and took really good care of us throughout the evening.
He knew we wouldn't have a big crowd but he was great and we all
really appreciated it.
In the end we had a "crowd" of about 50 people (I told
you about this market didn't I?) but they made a lot of noise and,
judging by the reactions afterwards, they really enjoyed the show.
The band was much stronger tonight and a lot tighter than the first
night. Karnataka opened the show for us and their set was good.
They are excellent musicians and probably just need some stronger
material. If you get a chance to see them though you should check
them out if you can.
Back to Fawlty Towers for a quick beverage and a relatively early
night
feeling good about things in general. We really are
a new band and we all view this as our beginning so dealing with
small crowds (which really would be helped by some advertising and
promotion!) is all part of the whole strategy. We're in this for
the long haul so our determination is firm and focussed. The main
thing is that the promoters are all asking us to come back!!
Next day...
