DAY TWENTY-ONE

The bus left Liscombe at 12:45 (Dave was late as always!) for the three hour (plus) drive to Crewe. Another venue I have never played so it will be an adventure as always. Trouble is the Fish & Chip shops are not open on Sundays so we might have to find a different form of "road rations"! Actually the fish and chip shop was open so that was a relief. We took a rather "creative" route to get to the club but we made it and the first person I saw was Mike Taylor from the Isle of Wight who was visiting his sister. My cold has gotten a little worse but we still made it through the show just fine and we have a couple of days off coming up so hopefully I will have a chance to rest a bit!

We will have learned a lot from these tours. Tonight was only our 30th gig but the band feels so tight and together that it seems like more than that. The real missing link is promotion and a lot of people seem to have forgotten how important it is. It's almost as if they expect gigs to be successful without it or maybe their expectations and goals are set so low that they feel it's not worth working for! Well we don't feel that way and on the next tour we will handle this completely differently! We have drawn up a plan and everyone involved really likes it so the next European leg should be really good.

The CD is selling well in Germany now and we are headlining a major festival in Berlin in August to kick it all off. As the saying goes… "if you want to be small, think small" and we're not thinking that way at all so we are careful now to work with people who understand our longer-term goals and ambitions. And we will be very "hands-on" through the planning stages. Free Spirit is a new beginning, not a comeback and in many aspects we expected to start from the ground floor. But we certainly don't plan to stay there… it's much too crowded for a start!!! Talk to you again from Newcastle!!

Next day...
