The Ogier The Ogier live in stedding
scattered throughout the human nations. They are natural and intelligent, but are quite different from humans. Ogier are larger than humans, often standing ten feet tall. The Ogier also live longer than humans, roughly three to four times as long as the
average human. This is the most likely reason for their deliberate, patient nature; they regard humans as hasty and impatient. During the Age of Legends, Ogier worked closely with humans. The Ogier have a special gift with living things, and they typically worked closely with the
Nym. It is also understood that some Ogier served among the Age’s law enforcement. Ogier are typically pacific by nature, but they are apparently fierce when roused to battle.
During the Breaking of the World, the Ogier were scattered and lost their stedding. They
wandered the world, searching for their peaceful havens. The desire to reach the stedding became so great that many Ogier began to die of what became known as the Longing. To this
day, Ogier who travel outside the stedding for extended periods may be overcome by the Longing. Once the Longing takes hold of an Ogier, they must return to a stedding or die.
Once the Ogier managed to return to their stedding, they settled in to stay. They now leave only to travel between stedding
and to do stonework. The Ogier learned after the Breaking that they have almost as great a skill with stone as they do with living things. Ogier stonework is
organic in nature, and often looks almost alive. It is Ogier stonework that brings in money for trade. Ogier stedding
are ruled by a Council of Elders. These Elders are old indeed, and give off an aura of wisdom and command that not even an Aes Sedai can hope to equal. Ogier culture is matriarchal in many ways. The Council of Elders is often
presided over by a female. Marriages among Ogier youth are arranged, with the young man having no say in the decision. The young woman, though, has some input into who she will marry.
The Ogier have become so withdrawn that most humans believe them to be creatures of legend. The Ogier are more closely tied to the stedding than they were earlier in history, but
they are also hesitant to deal with a human race losing touch with nature. |
