Stedding

Part of understanding the Ogier is learning about the stedding they live in.  The stedding are shielded in some undetermined way that prevents a channeler from even sensing the True Source.  This is the reason some male Aes Sedai took refuge among the stedding during the Breaking of the World , hoping to avoid the taint on saidin.  Some historians claim this was the reason the world was not completely destroyed during the Breaking.

Even the air within the stedding is different from that without.  People entering a stedding often shiver in surprise, and can typically sense the pervading peace of the place.  Trollocs will not enter a stedding unless driven by a Myrddraal, and even the Myrddraal will enter with only the greatest need.

The Ogier have long memories, and they prefer to live in regions remote from human habitations.  As a result, most of the forty-one inhabited stedding in the known world are in either rough mountains or dense forests.  The Ogier know of several stedding which are currently uninhabited, as they are too close to humanity.

The population of these stedding are uncertain; if the Ogier themselves know, they have not told anyone else.  But it is believed that the average population of each stedding is approximately six thousand.  Between the Spine of the World and the Aryth Ocean the Ogier population is roughly two hundred fifty thousand.

The Spine of the World has the largest concentration of inhabited stedding.  They are Qichen, Sanshen, Handu, Chanti, Lantoine, Yongen, Mashong, Sintiang, Taijing, Kolomon, Daiting, and Shangtai.  Stedding Yontiang, to the north, is in Kinslayer’s Dagger.

Ogier reside in six stedding within the Mountains of Mist - Chinden, Tsofan, Yandar, Madan, Jinsiun, and Shangloon. Stedding Feindu, Shajin, and Jentoine are all located in the Black Hills.  Located in the forests north of the River Ivo are Stedding Shamendar, Taishin, Leitiang, and Tsochan.

There are four more stedding east of the River Erinin and west of the Dragonwall: Nurshang, Tsofu, Cantoine, and Jenshin.  Seven more stedding are located in the Borderlands.  They are Stedding Chosium, Jongai, Saishen, Chiantal, Shanjing, Tanhal, and Sholoon.

Two more stedding are located in the mountains north of the River Dhagon, Stedding Mintai and Wenchen.  The last two stedding are along the Shadow Coast, Shadoon and Mardoon.

All of these stedding are remote from humanity, as the Ogier prefer to live their lives in peace.  Stedding Tsofu, in Cairhien , is the least remote Ogier habitation.  Even so, it is a full day’s walk from the nearest human habitation.  The remote locations of these stedding are one of the primary reasons why most of humanity believe the Ogier to be creatures of legend.
