Perrin Aybara Perrin Aybara was born and raised in Emond’s Field. He was apprenticed to
Haral Luhhan, the village’s blacksmith. Perrin was always larger and stronger than the other children, and he was in constant fear of injuring them. He is a very methodical thinker, though others have often
mistaken this for a lack of intelligence. Perrin, like his friends Mat Cauthon and Rand al’Thor, was forced to flee the only home he had
ever known as they were pursued by creatures of the Dark One. It was from a man named
Elyas Machera that Perrin learned something about himself, something that initially disturbed him greatly. Perrin
discovered that he was able to communicate with wolves, through his mind. His eyes turned to the burnished gold common to wolves, and his
senses of sight, smell, and hearing were enhanced. He is known to the wolves as Young Bull, and frequently speaks to them in what he knows as the Wolf Dream. These dreams actually take place in Tel’aran’rhiod
, the World of Dreams. Perrin initially found this ability very difficult to accept. However, he has in general learned to live with it, and use his abilities to an advantage when necessary.
Perrin has grown to hate the large half moon axe he carries at his waist. He dislikes violence
and killing, and has often considered throwing the axe away. It was Elyas who advised him not to, saying, “If ever you don’t hate it any longer, then will be the time to throw it as far as you can
and run the other way.” 10
Perrin is married to a Saldaean named Faile Bashere
, whose true name is Zarine. Faile is actually daughter to the Captain of the Saldaean army, and is a cousin to the queen. Perrin and
Faile get along extremely well, their strengths complimenting one another. Faile’s moods often confuse Perrin, though, and he sometimes wishes his wife was not such a complicated woman.
It was Perrin who came to the aid of Emond’s Field in its greatest hour of need. Creatures of the Dark One threatened his home, hoping to gain a response from Rand al’Thor. Perrin fought the ta’veren pull on him, and returned home. He took charge of the defense of
the village, and quickly became known as Lord Perrin Goldeneyes. Perrin’s new standing, as a Lord of sorts, has caused him a great deal of
discomfort. He dreams of the simpler times when childhood friends did not call him Lord. He also dislikes the idea of servants waiting on him.
Perrin is a major part of the fight against the Dark One. Without him, the Dragon Reborn will almost certainly fail in the Last Battle against the Dark One. |
