Rand al’Thor

Rand al’Thor grew up in the small village of Emond’s Field.  Unbeknownst to him, though, he was not born there.  Rand was actually born far away, on the slopes of the mountain known as Dragonmount.  His birth was the beginning of major events in the world, and the fulfillment of the Prophecies of the Dragon.

The first eighteen years of Rand’s life were quiet and normal.  He was the only son of Tam al’Thor, a widower.  Perrin Aybara and Mat Cauthon were his two closest friends, the three of them often adventuring in the wilderness of the Two Rivers .

This peaceful existence was shattered on Winternight, when Trollocs attacked Emond’s Field.  Rand and his friends fled the town under the protection of Moiraine Damodred and her Warder

Minions of the Dark One hunted Rand and his friends as they journeyed toward safety.  Rand was plagued by dark dreams of a stone chamber, where he was hunted by a man known calling himself Ba’alzamon.

Rand naturally had no idea why the Dark One would have taken an interest in him, or in his two friends.  However, the reason became clear when he reached the Eye of the World .  Here, Rand channeled the One Power and was able to defeat Aginor in a tense confrontation.

The Eye of the World was important for other reasons.  Several very important items were hidden at the Eye of the World, including the Horn of Valere and one of the seals to the Dark One’s prison, broken.

Perhaps most importantly, the banner of the Dragon was also preserved at the Eye.  It was at the Eye of the World that Rand al’Thor first realized he could channel.  He was slower to believe that he was the Dragon Reborn, destined to fight the Dark One in the Last Battle.

Rand al’Thor is much more than the Dragon Reborn, however.  He is also the one known as He Who Comes With the Dawn.  According to the Prophecy of Rhuidean, this man would unite the Aiel clans and then destroy them.  Also known as the Car’a’carn , this chief of chiefs was prophesied to be born of the Aiel, but raised by wetlanders.  Rand is actually the son of an Aiel clan chief and Tigraine, once the Daughter-Heir of Andor.

Rand is known to the Sea Folk as the Coramoor.  His coming would mean the end of their constant wandering over the seas of the world.  Thus, Rand al’Thor is the man pointed to in nearly every major prophecy as the man destined to lead the world against the Dark One.

It is not mentioned in the prophecies, but three women are fated to love Rand.  Elayne Trakand, Min Farshaw, and Aviendha all know this, and seem to have accepted the fact they all might end up sharing Rand.

Reasoning that other men with the ability to channel required a safe haven to learn about their abilities, Rand founded the Black Tower to find and train soldiers for Tarmon Gai’don.  Rand has also established a center for learning and science, where scholars and inventors have gathered to share their knowledge.

The fall of the Stone of Tear and the seizure of Callandor announced to the world that Rand al’Thor is the Dragon Reborn.  Since then, Rand has proceeded to unite virtually every nation, presenting a solid front against the forces of the Dark One.  There is still much work to be done before the Last Battle, though, and the forces opposing Rand and the Light grow stronger day by day.  The hope of the world lies on this young man’s shoulders.
