The 2.4 liter, single overhead cam 22RE has enjoyed much popularity in the US, no doubt due to it having been in the RA60 series Celicas, and also Hi-Lux and 4Runner trucks until 1992. The 22RE was the first fuel-injected four cylinder offered by Toyota in the US market, and also the last R-series motor made. Like the 20R and 22R, it is characterized by its low and midrange torque - perfect for hauling or haulin'.
