Detailed Information about the Geocities Readers Ring

The goal of the Geocities Readers Ring is to get people who aren't much into reading interested in books, and to broaden the areas of interest for those who do read. It is the not-so-humble opinion of the ringmaster that this is best accomplished with high quality web sites containing detailed and concentrated information on a narrowly defined subject area. For this reason, simple lists of "good" books are not allowed. Every page must contain a wealth of information on at least one author or series. A list of one's favorite books with comments and or reviews is acceptable, especially if those comments or reviews come from a diverse group of people. Poorly designed or programmed pages are not allowed, because more often than not a viewer will just skip over such a page, looking for the best offered. This just increases the time it takes a viewer to find something he or she might think worth reading, and brings them closer to getting fed up. Yes, you can call me an elitist scum if you want, but only in private mail please. Also, I value good programming technique, so if your code is a mess, I will send you tips on how to clean it up and make it more easily accessible. Since the code is not usually seen, though, this is left entirely at your discretion. Since one of the goals of the Reading Ring is to expand the bredth of style, all genres of writing are acceptable, including original writing. To have a page in the Ring, it must meet all of these requirements as outlined in the content guidelines, and be personally approved by the ringmaster (who is solely responsible for inserting pages into the ring).

Content Guidelines:
  1. The page to be added to the Ring must reside in Geocities, though extensions may lead out of the Geocities domain.
  2. The page to be added must contain depth of information. Mere lists are not acceptable. The page should in part have the purpose of exposing readers and non-readers to new subjects, authors, or books.
  3. The page to be added to the Ring must contain the code for the Ring "Toolbar" in some form. If you want to change the layout of the Toolbar to better suit your page, and are able to, just mail the ringmaster and describe the changes to be made. If the Toolbar is to be placed on a page dedicated entirely to rings, this URL must be entered as the page submitted to the ring. It is strongly suggested that the Toolbar be placed on an opening page with links to the sections containing information on books. If the Toolbar is placed in a "ring" page, please put a link as close as possible to the Toolbar which leads to the book/reading section.
  4. The page to be added must have a good design. This is at the ringmaster's discretion, though a petition can be sent if you disagree with the ringmaster's decision. Said petition will be promptly ignored, but feel free to send it anyway.
  5. The page to be added should have good, clean code. This is not actually a requirement, just a good suggestion for people who maintain websites.
  6. The page to be added cannot in any way be offensive to a viewer without proper warning. Certain topics cannot be included in said page AT ALL. If you have questions about what is acceptable, mail the ringmaster. If such subjects are added to the page after inclusion into the ring without permission or acknowledgement from the ringmaster, the page could be permanently expelled from the ring.
