Wytche's Kitchen

A witch's kitchen is the center of her home. There is a very logical explanation for this, it is the one room of the house where all four elements come together most of the time. Fire, water, earth and air. The fifth element, spirit, can be brought into this room as well. Look upon your kitchen work as putting magic into your belly, and you have instantly brought spirit into the kitchen.

As I have said in my housekeeping page, if you want a truly medieval feel, avoid plastic whenever possible. I use earthenware plates, bowls, and mugs. Also, many of my bakeware is pottery, rather than aluminum (just be sure it is leadfree and able to withstand the oven). I use earthenware mixing bowls, wooden cutting boards, etc...Use cloth napkins and kitchen towels, you can find them in great patterns and colors, and you help reduce waste by not using paper. There is a wonderful outdoor Farmer's market near my home every weekend. There is a Mexican family there consisting of the mother, her son, and her father who sell handmade wooden cooking utensils. They sit right there and carve these amazing, heavy, smooth spoons, slotted spoons, butter knives, rolling pins, spatulas, mortars and pestle, and many more. They are dirt cheap, and last forever. I have several, and hardly use anything else anymore. Find local artisans in your area, and support them by buying their products. You help them, and you give yourself a unique, interesting handmade item to add to your home.
While we are on the subject of farmer's markets, I cant think of a more fun way to shop for food. Why hang out in a sterile, flourescent supermarket when you can buy fresh foods outside in a bustling, atmosphere full of colorful people and sounds and scents? Of course I do shop at grocery stores for things I can only get there, but I love my markets so much more.

Keep bunches of dried flowers and herbs hanging in your kitchen. They can be used for many things, and add a definite old-world feel. A handful of dried lavender or cloves and cinnamon in a pot of simmering water can make a whole room smell great. Be sure and have a mortar and pestle around to grind the dry herbs you use in cooking.

A glass fronted medicine cabinet hung on an empty wall filled with teas and interesting coffee tins, as well as spices looks great.

Keep amethyst crystals on your stove to help ward off any negativity from your food. Use teapots and lemonade pitchers as flower vases. Everything in Wytche's kitchen has many jobs, nothing sits idle for very long. If you have good sun in your kitchen keep a small container garden of herbs or vegetables there. Or a window box outside the window.

A Little Kitchen Wisdom

This Season's Recipes for a Medieval Kitchen
Cherry O'Cream Pie
the most sinful, delicious, get-fat-quick pie on the face of the planet. As children, my brothers and I asked for this instead of birthday cake, and my son now asks for it on his birthday too. And it is stupidly easy to make.

I can of cherry pie filling
1 8 oz package of cream cheese--dont use low fat, it makes it runny.
I can of Eagle Brand sweetened condensed milk
1/3 c of lemon juice
1 tsp vanilla
one 9 inch graham cracker crust, half baked. Allow cream cheese to get to room temperature, make sure other ingredients are also room temp. Mix cream cheese, sweetened condensed milk, lemon, and vanilla until creamy, and pour into pie crust. Chill in the refrigerator over night, or at the very least, two hours. Top with cherry pie filling. Eat your heart out!

Fritters
this recipe lacks traditional measurements, it is made to taste, and with common sense. You will need
half a pint of full cream
four weel beaten eggs
a wee amount of brandy
a bit of nutmeg and ginger
flour
apples, chopped thickly
butter

Mix the cream into the eggs, add the brandy, nutmeg and ginger. Adding flour a bit at a time, make a thick batter. Fold in the apples ( or raisins if you prefer). Fry small handful sized scoops in butter until dark golden brown. Serve with coffee or tea and your morning paper!
