"Spirituality is often thought of in
such serious ways. When we think of meditation, we assume a serious or solemn demeanor
and in some cases, an intense air of expectation. While focus is necessary for the shifting
of the mental and physical bodies, it can be done in a way that is not so 'heavy.'
We respect and show reverent courtesy for sacred
things. In very sacred settings, there is a quiet calm, a soothing atmosphere that is
comforting to the spirit. It is a quiet and peaceful balm for the soul.
Having said this and understanding the place for
seriousness, we'd like to see more awareness of the good humor that is present in
spirituality. It is in the sharing of a group feeling of camaraderie that the spirit
opens up to others. And insights come with the quick wit of those who are nimble minded
in that area.
We can laugh and be sacred in our intent. For it
is intent that is at the core of the approach to progressive spirituality or growth.
The feeling of warmth that comes with laughter creates an environment of comfort, of
enjoyment, and energizing waves that changes the atmosphere and energy of the self and
those around or in the energy field.
Not all are comedians or have the gift of giving
laughter. However, we can look for opportunities to create a smile, a chuckle, or even
a grin. Look at the interaction when two people exchange an open laugh. Look at the
interaction when a roomful of people share a joke or a laugh. The energy of the room is
raised. And, the warmth generated by that energy can soften the rough edges of a hard
day or a hard life.
Being in a good humor and promoting that feeling
can be done with intent. There need not be a joke or a laugh, but simply a mood. There
are people who make us feel better when we are around them because of the 'lightness'.
This is not to say that a happy face is to be worn like a mask. Those kinds of masks are
usually very transparent. We all have our highs and lows and those famous ups and downs.
Still, again, with intent, we can increase our light heartedness with feelings if not
with laughter.
  Warm yourself with a smile."
