A partition is a divider, as you know, and can be
made of many different
materials. Where there was space, it was
divided. Though a partition
can separate very large spaces, it always
separates and divides the
whole into smaller sections or parts. We
partition ourselves in many
ways. Part of the reason for this is security
and protection and part
of the reason is a definition. By separating and
containing, we
identify. That partition sometimes indicates
'mine' - whether it is for
work in an office or a room in a home. Most
people like partitions of
some sort because the openness invites crowded
conditions. Though it
would seem there is more space, it is often
filled so we identify and
personalize our space to have room for ourselves
and for different
activities.
When we partition in life from others, we do so
for many reasons. Again
it may be survival or protection, but it is often
to identify the self
we are from others. Each person does need space
for that self and a
sense of identified space where we can have
others invited in or not, so
seeing that partition is necessary to different
degrees, why then should
we spend any thought on it? It is simply that
too often partitions
become blocks, walling us from others, and
becoming so strong that it is
almost impossible to allow anyone to come into
that space. We all know
'loners' and we respect their space, but if we
become too isolated in
our space, it does not allow as much room for
spiritiual growth as well
as mental and emotional growth. It is important
to remember the need
for balance in our lives, to construct the
partitions we need for space,
privacy and thoughtfulness, but also to remember
not to make them
impenetrable. Sometimes partitions can be
removed temporarily or they
can be left in place and one can symbolically
walk around them. It is
not necessary to think that one must be open at
all times and without
boundaries. We all need some time to think, to
listen, to turn within.
We need time to be ourselves in our own way
without the needs and
desires of others Partitions are neither good
nor bad totally, they
just are there for a need. When we hide behind
our partitions, that is
another outlook. It becomes a safe refuge and
haven, but sometimes it
can becomes a prison-like space. Again, we have
to have balance.
As the architect of your invisible space, whether
it be your mind or
your emotions or your physical body, remember to
add balance to the
partitions you build. Remember, too, that spirit
has no boundaries, yet
requires balance.
