To Know

The name of Casablanca is one of the most magical words... It's a mixture of many worlds and origins. It smells arabic, berber, african but also occidental. I suppose in your imagination, Casablanca is related to the famous movie, Casablanca even it was not shot there.

The origins of Casablanca trace to the medieval town of Anfa (Anfa is now the name of one of the suburbs of the city). Casablanca means in spanish "white house", so in Morocco, the city is called Dar Beida with the same meaning. With a population of well over four million, Darbida is the biggest city in Morocco. As you see in The Map, Casablanca is right in the middle of the country. Designed in the previous century, the city was laid out in the traditional French planning standards (Well, France was there). These standards lead to wide boulevards (Bd Hassan II, FAR, Mohammed V...), grassy parks (Ligue Arabe, Sindibad...) and imposing Mauresque buildings (Palais de justice...).

To Discover

What you can see in Casablanca depends on what you're looking for... For shopping, the medina is considered as one of the best areas in the city. While its heyday has long past, the area is still filled with carts overflowing with goods. Most of the craft industries are concentrated on the Boulevard H. Boigny (ex Boulevard Mohammed el Hansali). No doubt, that one of the first (and beautiful) buildings you should see is The Great Mosque , (It seems that it is the biggest one in the world).

To Communicate

The official language is arabic although some 50% of the population speaks the beautiful Berber language with it's three dialects (Tashelhit, Tarieft, Tamazight). French is widely spoken but the english is becoming a common language in touristic places too. Here some arabic phrases that may help you in your stay in Casablanca or Morocco.
