Alexandria - El Alamein

El Alamein lies 100 km or so west of Alexandria.  It is the site of the battle where the allies commanded by British General Montgomery drove back the combined tank forces of the Germans and Italians led by Field Marshal Rommel late in 1942.  The battle marked the end of the German/Italian offensive in North Africa.  Six months later, the allies had captured Libya.

Nothing much to see now but desert and the creeping holiday apartment complexes being built as summer homes for the Cairenes.  Minefields are still said to lie in the vicinity.

This is the British and Commonwealth cemetery with almost 7,500 marked graves and the names of over 11,000 more commemorated.  The German memorial houses the bodies of 4,280 men and the Italian cemetery 4,800 Italians.
