A lot's changed since I first started this site. Rather than abandon it, I've decided to focus on a literary realm that is all new to me...Books for kids. My kid is still a tot, so most of the books will be for tots.

Board Books

It's never too early to get them started on reading. Board books are fantastic! You don't have to worry about the little one tearing pages. Here are some of our favorites:

ABC Book Blocks This has almost everything: a box of little books, with a handle on them. My daughter loves to play with the books, as well as "read" them.

Barnyard Dance, by Sandra Boynton. Go ahead! Sing it! have some fun!

Bear in a Square has fun illustrations and provides plently on interactive potential between parent and child.

Big Red Barn I've read this one hundreds of times, and I'm still not tired of it.

Dinosaurs, Dinosaurs This is one of my very favorites, and one of the first that my daughter paid close attention to.

Good Night Moon A classic Bed time story.

Hippos Go Berserk, by Sandra Boynton. A fun counting book with adorable hippos!

Miss Spider's ABC, by David Kirk. Amazing illustrations, and a cleverly buggy alphabet.

Owl Babies--this is a great one, but not for bedtime or when mama's not home. The illustrations of the baby owls have an awful lot of character...especially little Bill.

Sheep in a Jeep is just plain silly fun. You may want to try Sheep in a shop as well, but we didn't like it as much.

Time for Bed is a sweet bedtime book.

Picture Books
My Friend Chicken is one of the best children's books I've seen. Both story and illustrations are creative and gorgeous. This is currently my daughter's favorite. (Feb 1, 2001)
New Parent's & Family--Getting Ready for the Baby.
Baby Bargains book cover Baby Bargains, 3rd Edition by Denise & Alan Fields
Having a baby? Go out and get this book. It's amazing how much STUFF a baby needs. It can be overwhelming, but books like this one can help make sense of it all with practical advice.
buy The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding
The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding by La Leche League International
The ultimate source for parents who want to do what's best for their babies, and nurse them.

Active Labor book cover

Active Birth: The New Approach to Giving Birth Naturally, Revised Edition by Janet Balaskas

I wish I had read this book first! Now that I've read many others, I'd recommend Active Birth over all others. With all the complications caused by and associated with medical interventions and pain killers, it's refreshing to read about how they can be avoided. Natural childbirth may not be for you and your partner, but it's worthwhile knowing some of your options. And the explanations for what is happening in the mother's body were more informative and satisfying to me than any other source I've encountered.

Brain Food for Mama & Papa
