Qualifications for a prospective Duty Officer

A high school school diploma or its equivalent and one year radio-teletype operations, sworn law enforcement, dispatching, forestry, fire fighting, or other public contact work. College education can substitute at the rate of 30 semester or 45 quarter hours for the required experience. Experience as described above can substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required high school education.

As a condition of employment, a person newly hired to state government on or after July 1, 1996, is required to participate in the direct deposit program pursuant to F.S.S. 110.113. Further information is available from the hiring authority.

When applying for positions, it is necessary to submit a completed State of Florida Employment Application to the designated contact person listed above on the announcement, on or before the application deadline. Applications that do not comply with these requirements will not be considered. Selection decisions will be made within 45 days of the closing date. Applicants selected for interviews will be notified during this period. Applications submitted may be considered for similar vacancies for up to 6 months from the application deadline.

Considerations and Requirements

1) The work shift and days off of a Duty Officer change each month or 28 days except in communication centers that have approved assigned shifts and assigned days off. You must be willing to work rotation shifts which are midnights, days, evenings, and relief to include frequent holidays, Saturdays, and Sundays. You may also be called in to work on your day off in emergency situations.

2) The job of a Duty Officer is a highly stressful position. You could be working alone on any given shift. At times you will have no contact with another person but by radio or telephone for the entire shift. During an emergency situation or periods of high activity, you would be unable to leave the communications center or sign the station off to return in a few minutes.

3) You may be required to attend training at the Florida Highway Patrol Training Academy in Tallahassee, Florida after employment and attend Division training requiring overnight or out-of-town travel.

4) You will be required to wear a Department issued Florida Highway Patrol Communications Duty Officer uniform to be in compliance with the Division's dress code The uniform consists of trousers and shirts for male employees and female trousers and shirts for female employees.

5) You will be required to purchase and wear shoes with the uniform that are black, lace-up, military style shoes with plain toes. You will receive $37.50 every six months for the purchase of shoes.

6) You will be required to obtain a Florida Drivers License and Florida automobile license tag before employment with the Florida Highway Patrol.

7) You must be willing to work at your officially assigned office knowing you are subject to reassignment to another office within a 50 mile radius on a temporary or permanent basis.

8) You will be working in a designated non-smoking building.

9) You will be required to handle several duties simultaneously, i.e., answer telephones, send teletype messages, fill out logs, answer radio, make telephone calls, et cetera, as needed.
