Hillary & Jackie. (Cinema Europa, 4pm 6/4/99)

The Cello. The slow, mournful hum of this instrument sings throughout the entire length of this film. I know the music used in the film was lively, and energetic; but all I heard was a low, melancholy note of sadness.

I didn't know how much it affected me until I tried to go to sleep this evening. After finishing the book I bought at Borders before the film, I am still wide awake. Waiting for sleep to come.

Fruitless so far.

I can hear now, the Elgar concerto in my head. The Bach cantatas. The low sweet sound of the cello.

I held back tears while watching the film. Not during the emotion wrenching moments of death and illness that made up the story line, but during those moments when above the distraction of the movie the music shone through.

The cello has a meaning for me that stretches wider than music, further than playing an instrument, it's in my heart.

The sound is all that I cannot say, all that courses through me, and all that hurts and tears and strains at me.

chary.
