The Legend Of Escanaba
"The Land Of The Red Buck"
In Indian tradition and legend, the name ESCANABA has a great significance. It is taken from the
Indian word "Eshkonabang," indicating that famous hunting ground north of Escanaba and
Gladstone, which was crossed by a famous deer trail. "Eshkonabang" attracted Indians from
hundreds of miles away and Indians from far and near came there to get their red deer. The
Escanaba River was the gateway to that famous hunting ground and most of the Indians paddled
their canoes up the river as far as Flat Rock, where they camped along the river.
Hence, many early residents got the impression that the word Escanaba meant Flat Rock.
"Eshkonabang" is still used by the Indians to indicate Escanaba and the vicinity. "Eshko" is taken
from "aiyaba," meaning "buck." The "ng" at the end of the word indicates "land," therefore we have
"Eshkonabang" for, THE LAND OF THE RED BUCK."
