The following is a reduced-size copy of a letter written by Launa B. (Fancher) Bastin in May 1963 to a Mrs. Alvin Bastin of San Antonio, TX who was researching the BASTIN family. Mrs. Alvin Bastin first wrote to Judge Roy Cann, noted historian of Hart County and Munfordville, KY. He, in turn, referred her to Mrs. Alfred Light, who in turn referred her to Launa Bastin, since she knew the older generation of BASTINs. This letter was the result.
Due to the 19th Century handwriting style, the following transcription is provided:
May 19, 1963
Dear Folks
I will try and answer your all's letter but I can't gave you much Information about the Bastin Family. My Husband's grandpa was name Tommie Bastin that was what They call him and he was a
Civil War Soldier and he had three boys and one was name Henry Bastin and that was Medford Bastin's Father. and one name Bluford Bastin and one name Richard Bastin but all of them are dead. So I don't know much to tell you for my Husband's Father never said much about his folks. And it has been a long time too. My husband has been dead 16 years and most of his grandchildren are dead to and one of Tommie Bastin grandchild. I would of love to help you but I can't not. As far as the Bible I do not Know any thing about it. I do not Know who had it but the house burnt once and I guess it got burn up. And for the Pontenter (Pointers) I don't know much about them. I know that they live in Hart county but we was not very close together so I can't tell you any thing about them.
I will decripe Tommie Bastin he was a larj fellow and had one of his arms shot off in the war but he was Jolly Old Fellow.

Launa was the wife of Alfred Amos Bastin. Her husband, Alfred, had died in 1946.
Her husband's grandfather was Thomas (Tommie) Bastin (III). Tommie was born in Caswell County, NC on 07 Apr 1818 and died in Metcalfe County, KY on 22 May 1889. He served in the Union Army with three of his sons, and with their friend D.W. Smith.

Thomas 'Tommie' and Louanna Bastin were also the parents of William M. 'Bill' Bastin , and Richard Emory 'Dick' Bastin . 'Tommie' was a son of Thomas Bastin, Jr and his wife Mary W. (Atwell) Bastin, and was a Grandson of Thomas and Hannah Bastin of Caswell County, NC.
