Obit, Columbus Ledger, Sunday, Aug. 17. 1980:

William Curtis Jeffries was a big man in his stature and in his work.

The former labor leader died Saturday at Muscogee Manor Nursing Home in Columbus. He was 78.

Jeffries was 6 foot one and weighed 225 pounds - and on the labor scene, he couldn't be missed. He was president of the Columbus Central Labor Union (forerunner of the Chattahoochee Valley Central Labor Council) and vice president of the old Georgia Federation of Labor. He tried to organize a textile union but it was unsuccessful.

He was 15 when he became a projectionist showing silent films at the Benieta Theater downtown. The business had already been unionized by the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees. He loved motion pictures, and he was a projectionist for 52 years.

He was also a reporter for the Ledger.

Jeffries, 1215 21st St., was born Aug. 2. 1902, in Columbus, son of Mr. And Mrs. John S. Jeffries. The outgoing, likeable man had lived in Columbus all of his life and was a member of the St. Mark United Methodist Church.

Notes for CLARA ELIZABETH SALTER:

Clara's Mother died when Clara was between the ages of 10 years and 11 years.  She went to live with her grandmother, Samantha Ham, until her death in 1916.  Clara then lived with her aunt, Mattie Lee Ham, called, Aunt Sweet by the family.

Clara was my grandmother.  We called her Granny and she was a wonderful Grandmother.  She was short and about as round as she was tall. She loved cowboy movies and took us to the Drive-In often.

She was so sweet and had spunk. She had a stroke once and she was determined to get back to normal. And she did!  She worked very hard at her exercises and returned to all of her normal activities.

She was very, very special.

My dad loved onions. I remember him talking about how hard times were when he was a kid. Actually, he wasn't complaining about  it. Just sharing his early life with me. His dad had left for a while and his mom, my grandmother, had three boys to support. She worked at the mills in Columbus, GA seven days a week for a $7.00 paycheck. This would have been in the late 20's. Dad and his two brothers were still in school. He told me, they would leave for school while his mom was still sleeping. She had worked all night.

When they returned home, she had gone back to work. She would make a big batch of biscuits and they would use those to make onion sandwiches. I cried when he told me that and I realized how hard his life must have been.

My grandmother and my dad were hard workers all of their lives. My dad quit school in the eight grade to help the family.

He was a part of the work program started by President Roosevelt. He said it was the best thing that ever happened to him.

When he joined the Army Air Corp, during WWII, he tested so high, he was allowed to choose his training. I have always been so proud of him, for his accomplishments. Considering his lack of formal education, he was a very successful man. He owned restaurants in Columbus and after we moved to

Florida, he took whatever work he could. He eventually became vice president in charge of production for Lawson Industries, a large window company, in Hialeah, FL. He developed all of the formulas for testing the glass doors and windows in the high rises, against high winds. I was so amazed that he knew algebra with no education.

Dad died in 1995 of lung cancer. Much of what he shared with me was done in the few months before he died. As hard as those times were, I will be forever grateful for those sharing times we had.
