NEWSGROUPS

Newsgroups, which are also called Internet Discussion Groups, function like electronic world wide bulletin boards. In a newsgroup you can post or view messages or reply to someone else's. If you reply to a posting in a newsgroup, you can choose to either reply to the list (Re:List), or to the individual (Re:Mail), or both (Re:Both). There are thousands of newsgroups, and the trick is finding the pertinent ones for you. For starters go to Deja News, which searches the archives of the newsgroups. At Deja News you can do a word search and then view previous articles that contain that word. You can also do a word search for relevant newsgroups and you can even post to a newsgroup from Deja News. Just keep in mind that all the information you read in the newsgroups is not necessarily correct. Thus, you should always be sure to consult your own doctor.

The system on which the newsgroups are posted is called Usenet. Which newsgroups and how many you receive depends on your internet provider. If you don't know how to access the newsgroups, the following instructions will hopefully help. I'm using Netscape 3.0 as my browser, therefore modifications to these instructions will be needed according to your browser. Let's begin our search for some medical newsgroups in the maze of Usenet:

1. in Menu Bar click Window
2. click Netscape News
3. click Options
4. click Show All Newsgroups
5. double-click alt.(about 3000 groups)
6. scroll down to alt.med (10 or so groups) and double-click
7. double-click a particular newsgroup to display the posts
8. to find more medical groups scroll pass alt. groups to sci (160 groups) and double-click
9. scroll down to sci med and double-click

Hopefully, you now have an understanding of how to access the newsgroups and can search further on your own. Good luck!

• Once you have opened the newsgroups window and you know the name of the newsgroup you want, click on "File" then click "Add Newsgroup", type in the exact name of the newsgroup and click ok, then put a check mark against the newsgroup name in the "News Server" window. You are now subscribed to that group. If you wish to "cancel" your subscription, simply uncheck the box and the next time you enter the newsgroups it will no longer show.
• If you can't assess a newsgroup because your server doesn't carry it, you can send an email to your server and request that they carry that newsgroup.
