"VERONICA"

This is a story about Veronica or "Verna" as she liked to be called. I am compelled to write these words and as you read on, the reason will become clear.

Verna lived in the same home for 78 years, her entire life. Her home is down the street from mine about 7 houses away. It is an older home in an older neighborhood but well kept as most are. She shared her home with two little dogs, Carmen and Kiesha, who have been with her for many years.

I recall a few years ago, Verna had minor surgery. Unbeknownst to her, she would be spending a few days in the hospital. She called and asked if I could take care of the dogs and watch her home."No problem" I told her and was glad to help.

Carmen took to me quite well but Kiesha seemed nervous and scared when I was around. It really wasn't a problem to take care of them for a few days, doing the best I could. They sure were glad to see Verna when she came back home.

I am cutting grass for some of the neighbors and notice Verna's grass is getting a little high. She has a fellow that comes and cuts it for her on a regular basis. Maybe he was ill or? Whatever the reason, I had the time so I cut the grass and got ready for work.

This morning I saw a neighbor who lives across the street from Verna. I was shocked and saddened when the neighbor told me Verna had passed away the previous evening while I was at work.

Saturday May 15th, 1999

< BR>The funeral mass was this morning at the local church. I met Carolyn there, a next door neighbor of Verna's and we sat together for the service. It was a beautiful sunny day. A beautiful day to go and be with Our Lord!

23rd psalm

The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures:
He leadeth me beside the still waters.
He restoreth my soul:
He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for His Name's sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for Thou art with me;
Thy rod and Thy staff They comfort me.
Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies:
Thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

So, Verna lived and died in the house she loved so much. I pass her home most every day as it is on the way to the main street. All those years, all those memories that house must hold. Memories that will never be forgotten!

Rest in peace my friend. May the Good Lord watch over you and keep you in His Care!
