LIFE HISTORY OF Euploea phaenareta castelnaui (The King Crow)

At the next instar, the caterpillar turns a dull purplish hue with the stripes in black, white and pinkish-purple.  The filaments are purple and black with white tips.  The caterpillar is rather sluggish and appears to favour only the young leaves of the host plants.
Another view of the "purple" instar of the caterpillar.  The filaments are held erect when the caterpillar is disturbed, apparently resembling hostile poisonous spines as a "scare tactic".
