(After several days of laryngitis, I decided to write an ode to sound)
That great Englishman, Thomas Carlyle, In his Sartor Resartus, quoted an olden Swiss saying which states ...Silence is golden.
The man who made this wise decree Had surely never heard a heavy metal band. So I ask—Who was this person of Switzerland?
At times, when the noise is intense, I agree that silence is a wonderful scheme. It allows us some time to think and to dream.
But days of laryngitis and quiet solitude, Trying to whisper a thought or write a letter Have made me conclude that sound is often better.
The Swiss who said, ...Silence is golden. Was most likely not deaf or ever spent weeks Trying to remember the sounds that he speaks.
In my ancient wisdom, I have come to discern That a lot of great things could be said for each. I am pleased there is silence, but I am ecstatic there is speech.
